POLICY DIALOGUE DAY THEME:

“ Disaster Resilience for adaptation to Climate Change in Africaâ€

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE

Disaster Risk Reduction is among the five priority areas for the implementation of the Global Framework for Climate Services for adaptation to climate change.  Floods, droughts and storms are recognized in the integrated African strategy on meteorology as hazards causing significant disasters.  Recent droughts (2015/16 over Southern Africa and 2016 in the Greater Horn of Africa) are evidences indicating the high vulnerability of Africa to extreme events with impacts across sectors of the economy and society.

The African, Caribbean and Pacific-European Union Programme (ACP-EU) on Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) seeks to strengthen the resilience of the sub-Saharan African regions, countries and communities to the impacts of natural disasters.  The Programme’s purpose is to provide the basis to accelerate the implementation of the Sendai Framework for DRR through the African DRR strategy.

Result area 3 of this programme  focuses on strengthening capacities of national and Regional Climate Centers (RCCs) to meet the needs of DRR agencies and socio economic sectors for weather and climate services and early warnings.  The Satellite and Weather  Information Disaster Resilience in Africa (SAWIDRA) project is under implementation through the African Development Bank' s ClimDev Special Fund  to contribute to this result area.

The African Centre of Meteorological Applications for Development (ACMAD) and its partners implement the SAWIDRA project... This project aims among others to strengthen the Europe-Africa cooperation on policies, strategies and programmes to combat climate change and ensure climate resilient development.

 

The main objective of this event is to contribute to raising awareness of  African policy and decision makers to support implementation of the Paris agreement , Sendai Framework for DRR and Sustainable Development Goals in Africa. It will also be an opportunity to discuss planning and budgeting of Meteorological services to support  in resilient development in Africa.
