Monthly climate diagnostic bulletin for November 2021

Highlights

  • The precipitation during February 2022, above-average to well above average was observed over the northern edges of Libya and Egypt, southeastern Ghana, southern Togo and Uganda, Rwanda, western Kenya, much of DRC, Tanzania and Malawi, northern Zambia and Mozambique, western Namibia, as well as parts of Angola, South Africa and Madagascar.

  • Below to well below-average precipitation was observed over northern Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya and Egypt, most of the Gulf of Guinea countries, southern Cameroon, CAR, Zambia and Mozambique, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, northern and southern Congo, northern DRC, central Ethiopia, Kenya, Angola and Madagascar, much of Uganda, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Eswatini, as well as eastern South Africa.
  • The precipitation in the percent of average for December-January- February 2021/2022 season was above to well above average over the northern edges of Libya, western DRC, Rwanda, central and southern Kenya, much of Tanzania and Malawi, central South Africa, central Namibia, and pocketful over Zambia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique and Madagascar.
  • Below-average precipitation was observed over northern Morocco and Algeria, Equatorial Guinea, much of Gabon, southern Cameroon, Angola and Mozambique, central DRC and Uganda, and western Madagascar. Pockets of dryness were also observed over Libya, Kenya, Botswana, Zimbabwe, and South Africa
  • Positive temperature anomalies, greater than or equal to 1.5°C were observed during February 2022 over Senegal, Gambia, Guinea Conakry, Guinea Bissau, much of Namibia and the southern edges of South Africa. During the December-January-February 2021/2022 season, positive temperature anomalies greater than or equal to 1.5°C were observed over most countries in the Gulf of Guinea, Niger, Burkina Faso, Senegal, Guinea, Gambia, Mali, Mauritania, Morocco western Algeria and northern Madagascar.
  • A very small area in central South Africa experienced negative temperature anomalies less than -1.5°C.
  • During February 2022, dry conditions were observed over northern Morocco, southern Guinea, southeastern Nigeria, Equatorial Guinea, southern Cameroon, parts of Gabon, CAR and Congo, eastern and north-western Angola, western Zambia, northern Botswana, central Mozambique, as well as much of Liberia and Zimbabwe.
  • The moderate to extreme wet conditions were observed over Eritrea, central Mali and Chad, southern Niger, northern Nigeria, parts of Sudan, South Sudan, Ethiopia, Angola, Namibia, Rwanda, western Uganda, northern Zambia and Mozambique, as well as much of Somali, Tanzania and Malawi.
  • During the MAM 2022 season, normal to above-average precipitation is expected over the northern fringes of Algeria and Tunisia, Guinea, Sierra Leone, southern Mali, western Burkina Faso, northern Cote d’Ivoire, southern Congo, eastern and western DRC, central and western Angola, Burundi, Rwanda, much of Tanzania and Malawi, as well as northern Zambia, Mozambique and Madagascar.
  • Below-average precipitation is very likely in northeastern Morocco, northwestern Algeria, coastal parts of Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana, Benin, Togo, Nigeria, southern Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, central Somalia, eastern Zimbabwe and South Africa, as well as southern Ethiopia, Mozambique and Madagascar.
  • Above average Temperature is very likely over northern Morocco and Algeria from March to June 2022
  • Near to above average temperature is very likely over central and southern Morocco, much of Algeria, Libya, north and central Mauritania, northern Mali, south-eastern of Angola, south-western Zambia. Most parts of Botswana and south-western Zimbabwe
